The steep learning curve for advanced configurations was the biggest challenge. Setting up clustering, auto-scaling, proper security (tokens, SSL, stream authentication), and fine-tuning performance required significant time and trial-and-error. The documentation is decent for basic setups, but it often lacks clear, real-world examples for more complex production deployments. Monitoring and observability could be much better. The dashboard shows raw metrics (CPU, memory, bitrate, etc.), but it doesn’t provide deep insights into stream health, viewer experience, or why a particular issue might be occurring. Debugging problems under load sometimes felt like guesswork. We also hit scaling limits on a single instance. Even on a powerful server, we started seeing instability and unexpected behavior once we exceeded around 400–500 concurrent WebRTC connections. Horizontal scaling works, but it adds complexity and requires careful architecture planning. Finally, adaptive bitrate (ABR) quality wasn’t always perfect. In some cases, we noticed visible quality drops or inconsistencies when the server switched between resolutions, especially under varying network conditions. After using it for several months in a production environment, I can confidently say it’s one of the strongest self-hosted solutions available for ultra-low latency live streaming. We successfully built and scaled interactive live features that would have been much more expensive using purely cloud-based SaaS platforms. The SDKs and APIs are well-designed and easy to integrate into web, desktop (using electron) and mobile applications. Documentation is clear, and implementation is straightforward for me as a developer. WebRTC performance is excellent for real-time broadcasting consider 1-1 call or one to many. Security: Token-based authentication, stream-level security, and access control features are robust and flexible. We were able to integrate it securely within our existing architecture without major customization. Architecture Fit: Ant Media fit seamlessly into our application architecture. We deployed it in a scalable environment and integrated it with our backend services and CDN layer without friction. We have implemented this in the following technologies (Node, react, angular, nextjs, laravel, react native, wordpress). If i talk about learning curve, It is between easy and moderate. If you have prior experience with streaming technologies (RTMP, WebRTC, HLS), onboarding is quite smooth. Even for teams new to WebRTC, the documentation and sample projects make it manageable. I had tried "kurento", "wowza" and some open source media server in my early days. It was really very frustrating to debug issues and get resolved. With Ant Media Server, you need not to worry about streaming issues anymore. Just focus on your business. Now I say: Streaming means Ant media Server. What they are providing is really value for money, For every business use case they have best plans available to subscribe. I tested their 14 days free trial before integrating into my live streaming platform. Plugin development on top of Ant Media Server is very helpful for developers to create some new features and functionality. > > **Inconvénients**: Not exactly a negative, but during initial setup we needed clarification on a few configuration and scaling aspects. On-Premise Installations (IRB and privacy considerations): As a university, we work with student data and IRB considerations. On-premise installations mean that we do not have to upload any student faces or videos from the lab to any third-party cloud services. Student-Friendly Pricing Model: Thanks to the community edition, I was able to build my capstone project without going through the process of getting budget from the department. Perpetual licenses are also very useful for university labs that have servers running for decades. Limitations of Community Edition: There is no GPU acceleration and auto-scaling in the free edition. We can't do massive (up to 1,000 users) conferences simulation for our research without switching to Enterprise version of the application that needs proper financing from grants. Difficulties with Updating the Application Version: Updating the application version is a difficult process, especially in universities when we have legacy code built for previous APIs and the upgrade procedure usually takes a whole weekend of regression testing. > > For me as an undergrad researcher in Computer Science, Ant Media Server was an invaluable tool. What made it so special for us was the MoQ support as this puts us a step ahead in terms of networking research. Its deployment on our university cloud not only addressed our concerns related to the privacy of data but commercial providers of SaaS could not offer this either. Nevertheless, there were quite a few challenges faced by my undergrad assistants in deploying it for the first time because the documentation is quite technical and requires prior knowledge regarding the configuration of TURN/STUN server and SSL certificate management.
